Did you know that certain establishments and buildings must have fire doors? Particularly those frequented by the general public. For a good reason, it is a real safety device that helps save lives in the event of a fire.
Doors are essential complements in any building. However, an ordinary door is useless in the face of a fire. In order to protect the building and its occupants, the fire safety standard requires the installation of protective devices such as fire doors.
When the fire starts, the fire door helps isolate the burned area to prevent the spread of fire to the rest of the building. In this way, it makes possible the rapid evacuation of the building and extinguishing the fire. In this sense, the fire door is a passive fire protection device.
What is a fire door?
Fire doors manufacture from Metal, wooden, or glass fire. It is a door with high fire resistance. They help to compartmentalize strategic areas of a building and divide space into smaller areas. In this way, when a fire breaks out in an area of the building, the fire door helps to prevent the spread of fire and smoke to adjacent areas. Thus, its role is to prevent the spread of the fire. It allows the evacuation of the building, the rescue, and the extinction of the fire.
Its mission is to contain, for a while, the fire that is spreading. This gives the building users time to evacuate. Moreover, it helps the firefighters to intervene quickly before the fire crosses the wall.
For optimal protection, the fire door must have the following features:
• It gives integrity or ability to withstand the effects of fire on the exposed side. It prevents the fire spread to the opposite side of the door amidst the escape of flames or gas.
• It offers the isolation or ability to withstand the effects of fire on the exposed side. Without letting the fire spread to the opposite side of the door due to thermal transmission.
• Fire resistance time may vary depending on project requirements (30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes).
• It provides the durability of the automatic closing system. That is to say, the ability to maintain backlash, force, and speed of opening and closing. It does not exhibit faults after a considerable amount of opening/closing cycles.
