I have three personal experiences that could be relevant to this question. First of all, when I was a little bit younger, I was fascinated by these spy movies where the detectives hooked the locks in seconds, so I did some reading on how to do it.
What are my three solutions to open a stuck door?
When a little boy in our family accidentally locked the door of our room before leaving the room. I took the challenge to test what I had learned.
Use a paper clip!
Using a reused paperclip, you can probe and shake a door button until about 10 minutes. Then, with a little patience, the cursed door will open.
First, just make the paper clip fairly flat. Then use a tensioner in place of your key. Once it stops spinning, that’s when the paperclip comes into play. Insert it while moving it inside. To open the door, move the paper clip and the tensioner at the same time.
What if your bedroom lock gets stuck?
It can happen that when you turn the key, it just keeps turning without catching anything. Do you know how to open a locked bathroom door?
If it’s getting late and you have little kids sleeping in their rooms. They have to be in school the next day. You won’t bother looking for a paper clip or drill. Instead, look for a credit card!
You can easily open the door by following the simple steps below:
- Slightly insert the card between the cracks in the door. Make sure the card is straight and vertical to the door. Aim to hit the striking plate using the edge of the card.
- Slide the card further inside by folding it and pushing it a little more towards the door handle.
- Fold the card on the opposite side to reach the angled end of the angled latch.
- Shake the credit card back and forth to hook the door lock. If you’ve trouble opening the door, try leaning against the door. Apply more pressure to the latch while folding and shaking the card. Do this until the door opens.
But what if you do not have a credit card. Obviously, you’re not going to find a paperclip in the bathroom. It will, therefore, be out of the question to pick the lock. In that case, it would be better to ask for help from a person who is outside the bathroom. Some people will still try to pick your lock, but if they are not very good, the lock will certainly refuse to give in.
In this situation, it will be fine if someone is thinking of taking out a mini drill. This will be hard, especially if it is the first time that this person has done such a thing. It will be necessary to drill carefully through the lock to avoid damaging the rest of the door. If that does not work, you will have to start drilling holes in the wood in the hope of breaking the cylinder.
You should be aware that this will practically destroy a huge part of the door where the lock was pressed. You can even end up changing the whole door. What is the use of a bathroom door if it cannot be locked?
Problems with old uPVC doors.
Is there an old uPVC door in your bathroom? If yes, you must know the problems with it. The uPVC lock mechanism issues are very common in old doors. There are various reasons for jamming your uPVC door lock.
Broken keys, rust in the locks, worn hinges, and misalignment are the most common issues of a stuck door lock. And doors that simply don’t open.
You may need to hire the services of a locksmith to make door lock repairs, or even replace the door entirely. It depends on the cause of the blockage of the door and jammed lock.
Replacing the entire mechanism may put a dent in your pocket, but in many cases, inevitable.
Replace the lock mechanism
The lock mechanism is an essential part of the locking mechanism of a uPVC door. It could be the reason why you are having problems. If you tried to insert your key in the lock and it emits a familiar click sound (like unlocking), it means there is no problem with the barrel lock. However, the problem will most likely lie with the internal mechanism.
Each lock will require a unique locking mechanism. It depends on the particular make or model of the door as well as the lock.
Euro cylinder defective
If the key cylinder breaks down, you will have to think about repairing or replacing the PVC door lock. You can maintain your budget by replacing this part, along with additional new keys.
